Westland Whirlwind (fighter plane) part 2

And here's number two. In a fictitious winter camouflage, the second Whirly faces its sister. The biggest difference between them apart from the colours is the wheel wells. There were made by using a template from the cut-out nacelle parts that indicate where the original parts for the gear bay doors would go. I added some side walls and voilĂ .
More of the build after the break.

These are the wheel wells. Quite simple but it is just meant to give the Whirlwind more depth. I glued the box around the outside with small strips of paper.

Using tweezers, I attached the wheel wells to the outside skin. It's all just edge glueing.

Above are some alignment pictures, showing the nacelle reaches over the wing and ends well after the trailing edge.

I adapted the 'Acorn" a little and made the 'legs' thinner so they wrapped around the leading edges more easily.

I scratch built a tail wheel.

I used sewing pins for the smaller struts. Inside the large struts is some welding wire. (2.5 cm). It all has been secured in place with CA.

There's not that much to add, really, it was a pleasure to build this plane. And I love its shape. It looks a little like a little Mosquito. Unfortunately, there are no original examples left, they were all scrapped after the war. However, in the UK there is a small team of people working on a full-scale replica which, I think, will be airworthy too. Let's hope it will see the light of day one of these years. I'd love to see a Whirly take to the sky again.

Thanks for passing by again,
